Use the Type 1 Gage Study to evaluate the capability of a measurement process. This study evaluates the combined effects of bias and repeatability based on multiple measurements from a single part.

A Type 1 Gage Study should be done prior to conducting other gage repeatability and reproducibility studies, which determine how much of your observed process variation is due to measurement system variation.

Dialog box items

Measurement data: Enter the column containing the observed measurements for a single part. Minitab requires at least 10 observations to perform this analysis; however, you should have at least 25 observations for an adequate study.

Reference: Enter a known reference value of the single part that you measure. Ideally, this value should be close to the center of the tolerance zone for the measured characteristic.

Tolerance  Choose to enter either a tolerance, or one of the specifications.

Upper spec - lower spec: Choose to enter a known tolerance for the measurements. Calculate by subtracting the lower specification limit from the upper specification limit. In cases where the lower limit is a natural zero, the tolerance is simply the upper limit. You must enter a tolerance for the capability indices to be calculated.

Lower spec only: Choose to enter only a lower specification limit for the measurements. Minitab does not calculate capability indices if you only specify one specification limit.

Upper spec only: Choose to enter only the upper specification limit for the measurements. Minitab does not calculate capability indices if you only specify one specification limit.
