Symbol

For some graphs, Minitab displays symbols at individual data values, so that you can visually assess their patterns. Minitab displays symbols at summary statistics, such as the mean, median, or count, for some graphs by default. You can add these symbol displays to some graphs that don't display them by default; for example, add a mean symbol to an individual value plot or add individual symbols to an interval plot. You can edit the type, color, and size of all symbols at once, groups of symbols, or an individual symbol.

Individual values

Each symbol on this individual value plot represents a single apple circumference.

Minitab displays a different type of symbol (shape and color) for each group. For example, on this scatterplot of apple circumference vs. weight, the four types of symbols represent four varieties of apples.

Individual value symbols have been added to this boxplot of apple circumferences.

Note that outlier symbols (*) display by default for boxplots.

Summary values

Symbols on this interval plot represent the mean apple circumferences for two orchards.

Symbols have been added to this histogram of apple circumferences to highlight the frequency for each bin.
